Brett Barry’s crisp, well-paced reading free of theatrics allows the author’s words to resonate. Listeners will get the sense of walking alongside Thoreau as he leads them—half authoritative teacher, half marveling student—on a tour of the evocative landscape.

Brett is a consummate professional who completely understood the feel of my audio project. He wields Pro Tools like a sword and helped me bring the audio of my animation project into being with just the right timing, effects, and layering.

As with any audio book, the narration is very important. This is one of those books that will captivate you with not only the content, but with the narration.

Barry’s voice is warm and inviting. His smooth narration allows you to see the beach, smell the salt air and hear the wind whipping through the sand and the waves crashing against the shore… you can actually smell the coffee brewing on the stove in the tiny kitchen.

Brett Barry spoke clearly and paused at the right time to indicate section breaks. Amazingly, he pronounced the place names correctly, and as far as I know, the scientific names too. It was easy to imagine it was John Muir reading his journal out loud.

Barry shines as the voice of Beston, a naturalist. Barry’s narration captures the poetry of Beston’s lyrical passages, in which he expresses views on wildlife and conservation that are decades ahead of their time.

Even when word combinations are clumsy, Brett Barry makes everything sound smooth and understandable. He handles the authors’ attempts at humor with grace and sounds perfectly in tune with the program’s intentions.

Excellent audiobook, through and through. The story was moving. The narrator was awesome. I highly recommend it.

[Brett] was amusing and gave character to the dialog! It made me laugh out loud, so my family kept asking me what was happening. Best to listen to this book when you are by yourself!
